Schengen Area Expansion: Bulgaria and Romania Gain Full Access
Summary
In a historic development for European integration, Bulgaria and Romania have officially gained full membership in the Schengen Area, including land border access, expanding the passport-free zone to 29 countries.
With Bulgaria and Romania's full Schengen integration, travelers can now move seamlessly between 29 European countries without border checks. The Schengen Area represents the world's largest passport-free travel zone, encompassing approximately 450 million people. For international travelers, including those from Singapore, this expansion simplifies multi-country itineraries. A single Schengen visa or ETIAS authorization will allow visits to all member states.
Bulgarian and Romanian tourism authorities anticipate significant increases in visitor numbers following full Schengen integration. Both countries offer rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and competitive prices compared to Western European destinations. Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and ski resorts, along with Romania's Transylvania region and Carpathian Mountains, are expected to attract increased international attention.
Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union in 2007 but faced an extended wait for Schengen membership due to concerns from some existing members about border security. Both countries met the technical criteria for years before political obstacles were finally overcome. The partial integration achieved in 2024, covering air and sea borders, demonstrated both countries' capability to manage Schengen external borders effectively.
With the Schengen Area's expansion, preparations continue for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which will require visa-free travelers to obtain pre-travel authorization. Singapore citizens, currently enjoying visa-free Schengen access, will need ETIAS once the system launches. The expanded Schengen Area means ETIAS will cover more territory than initially planned.
